Artworks for sale
Self taught, adventurous artist, influenced by and a product of the constant evolving global society of the 21st century. I am fascinated by our daily life and our media created reality world, with everyone’s hunt for fame and the obsession with ‘surface’ and appearance rather than depth and essence. The majority of my works focus on the ‘surface’ – the canvas as a medium and what you can do with it.
I love to work with contrasts – especially the contrasts between ‘loud’ (i.e. graffiti) and ‘quiet’ (cross stitch embroideries) and ‘superficial’/‘cold’ (the painted canvas) versus the tactile and tangible (the embroideries).
I’ve specialized in a fairly extinct line of crafts – the good old cross stitch embroidery! I try to lift the embroideries out of their frumpy world of doilies and pillows and replace them in a new artistic context.
The embroideries have several qualities in my works: first they push the boundaries of the canvas as a medium. The canvas is not just a surface for painting – it is also a piece of fabric in which you can sew. Second, the pixilated images with their references to screen dumps and poor quality photographs with too low resolution, gains a modern quality once their sewn to the canvas and interacts with the painted images. Lastly, the embroideries lend a timely quality to the artworks.
The majority of my works are painted very fast, and the contrasts appear when I hereafter sew on the canvases, where time comes to a halt and I engage in detail, precision and craftsmanship. In unison the embroideries and painted images create a series of modern and complex works, highly tactile and tangible and with linguistic and symbolic references to our daily life and surroundings.
I have lived and exhibited in Singapore from 2004-2008 and have a Masters degree in Danish and Semiotics from University of Copenhagen. I have participated in Spektrum’s (Artschool) Summer Course 2009 and have held exhibitions in a range of companies in Copenhagen.
